Celtic captain Scott Brown has stated that he hopes any players who want to leave the club would come and speak to him as captain.
The Hoops crashed out of the Champions League at the second qualifying round stage to Hungarian champions Ferencvaros last night. A shocking 2-1 home defeat stunned the supporters and has led to major questions being asked of the manager.
Neil Lennon came out post-match and made a startling revelation as he claimed that players have been looking to leave the club and have been looking to work their ticket over the last six months or so (The Herald).
Brown, however, is unaware of any such discontent. Speaking in the Scottish Sun, the Celtic captain was asked whether he would urge any wantaway player to come and speak to him.
“Yeah definitely. I hope everyone wants to be here. For me, it’s a fantastic club. There’s a lot of lads that love this club who want to see us winning games and have been there throughout, winning trophies, winning trebles and we know the feeling and it means so much to us.
“But for now, if people don’t want to be here it’s hard but it’s not up to me whether they stay or not. That’s for the manager and the board and that’s a discussion with the players that want to be here and the players that don’t want to be here.
“For me the lads want to be here. I don’t know what people have said to him (Lennon) individually to be perfectly honest.”
Captain clearly isn’t in the know here
As much as Brown takes on so much responsibility at Celtic, it’s clear from his comments that he isn’t in the know when it comes to players who want to leave.
This is a massive problem for the club and it just appears to have come out of nowhere. It makes you wonder what else the manager is hiding from us in terms of discontented players.
This is something that has clearly been on Lennon’s mind for a while. However, you would never have noticed it in the last few weeks as we were all made to believe everything was rosy in the Parkhead garden.
We’re going for 10-in-a-row here, so any issues within that Celtic dressing room need sorting as soon as possible. Whether you viewed the Champions League as a bonus this season or not, last night’s result was absolutely shocking.
The captain has a real job on his hands trying to keep the dressing room happy after that, especially when you take Lennon’s comments into account.
A massive few weeks lie ahead at Celtic. Player departures also now look absolutely inevitable, and it’s anyone’s guess as to who will make way.
