Celtic coach Darren O’Dea was awarded his UEFA Pro Licence this weekend after an involved learning process and continuing progress at Lennoxtown.
The news was shared in an interview with Off The Ball yesterday as the former defender went into all sorts of topics, including his coaching philosophy and working with manager Ange Postecoglou.
The UEFA pro licence course is delivered across nine modules over a 20-month period and across a learning programme that combines face-to-face learning with independent study – including overseas study trips.

After someone has successfully completed the course, they will be able to pursue any elite-level coaching opportunity across the game.
Candidates also present a final thesis of their course learning. It’s an involved process that requires dedication and commitment, as well as strong experience and qualifications as a barrier for even starting the pro-level tier.
Speaking to Off The Ball, O’Dea described his coaching career as something he wants to do over a number of decades now he has earned the qualification, stating: “I’m really passionate about it. I think, without sounding arrogant, I think I’m good at it. I’ve got good attributes for it, so now it’s about putting in the work.
“That’s what I’ve been doing the last number of years. Since I’ve retired, I’ve worked a hell of a lot harder, a lot longer hours. But I love it. I love doing what I do every day. That’s the key to anything. It certainly doesn’t feel like work. I’ve been enjoying the last few years.”
O’Dea is currently sharing head coach duties with Stephen McManus at Celtic, overseeing the club’s B team in the Scottish Lowland Football League. That has come after serving time working under Tommy McIntyre, who has now left the Bhoys.
Congratulations to the Irishman are in order, with all eyes on what could be a very promising coaching career!
