Celtic-daft boxer Michael Conlan makes big impact on the world stage

Celtic supporting boxer Michael Conlan has made a huge statement on the global boxing scene with a points victory over TJ Doheny this weekend.

Conlan was fighting for the interim WBA featherweight world title and impressed in front of a hometown crowd in Belfast last night.

The 29-year-old was a unanimous winner with the judges, taking his professional boxing record to an impressive 16-0 and winning the interim belt.

He’s now eyeing a massive title fight at 122lbs against Stephen Fulton or Brandon Figueroa, who face off next month.

Conlan told BBC Sport: “My eyes are still on that 122lb word title fight. This is a 126lbs [win]. I can definitely fluctuate between both, but my eyes are on that 122lb fight if that opportunity is still there with the WBO. If it’s there before the end of the year, I’m happy to take it.

“There’s a load of opportunities in both divisions and I’m happy to have the options now.”

Conlan is a well known Celtic fan. He’s previously appeared in club publication The Celtic View talking about his love for the club.

He told the official club website in 2019: “Walking out there in front of 10,000 plus in a park which I grew up, where I had many unpaid fights in the past, to ‘Grace’ was amazing. I knew how everybody would react, and then when ‘Let the People Sing’ kicked in, the whole place went buck mad.

“It’s very hard to explain how I felt walking out to that. If I’m honest, it was the best sporting experience of my whole life. Obviously, having kids is different because that’s really personal but in terms of my career that experience was undoubtedly the best ever.

“I’ve been a Celtic fan all my life. The songs that are sung in Celtic Park are close to my heart and close to every Celtic fan’s heart. The fact that I’m able to play them in a boxing atmosphere means a lot to me. You can see how attached people are to those songs and how they affect them emotionally.”

Last night’s win only increases the hype surrounding his career. He’s now well placed to go on and become a bonafide superstar on both sides of the Atlantic.
