Every Celtic fan will tell you that our results in Europe didn’t match up to our performances. At times, our opponents just didn’t know how to handle us. And there is no better proof of that of when we lined up to take on Real Madrid at Celtic Park.

Celebrity fan, Martin Compston was reliving that night and said what he witnessed then is something he has never seen a Celtic team do in all his years following the club.

Speaking to The Celtic View podcast, Compston said, “I was sitting there for the Barcelona game and I’ve seen us beating Man United here, I’ve seen us beat AC Milan here. I’ve seen some incredible things. I think the next step for Ange has to be Europe.

“But that first half and at the end of the day, we lost the game, but that first half against Real Madrid, we went toe to toe with them and I’ve never seen us do that. We were every bit as good as them, in terms of a footballing sense.

“And if you just you relive that Callum [McGregor] shot. If that goes then you don’t know. I mean, you’re still playing the European Champions and they are that for a reason but I’ve never seen us really go at a team of that calibre.

“And really, we did not look out of place. And that is exciting to see. Maybe times because the gap is so huge with these clubs and they’ve got so much money. But people say he’s not got a Plan B. But he doesn’t want a Plan B. That’s the way we are going to play.

“And you can see glimpses of it. It was definitely working at points, but it becomes exciting again. I’m looking forward to the Champions League next year.”

That night was something special. It was the first time we had met Real Madrid in Europe for a generation and the anticipation leading up to that night was brilliant.

I am confident in saying that the fans were looking forward to seeing us play our style against the Galactic’’s more than we were looking forward to seeing the Spanish superstars.

And Ange didn’t disappoint us. I have said consistently on 67 Hail Hail that I cannot wait to see us in Europe next year. We have a settled squad and two years of Ange’s system under our belt. I think we are going to take a couple of big scalps at Paradise next season.
