As has quickly been established in his short time at Celtic, Alistair Johnston both isn’t afraid to say exactly what he thinks nor get stuck into the more combative side of football.
Johnston has been a tough and committed performer across his 11 appearances for the club – to the extent it already feels like he has been in place for much longer than he has.
Having made his debut at Ibrox and showing up well, he was never going to be a retiring presence in last week’s Hampden final against our rivals. He was more than happy to get involved in personal battles on the pitch and at one point in the face of opponent Borna Barisic.

Alistair Johnston refuses to cower in derby heat
Asked about that particular incident with the Croatian in an interview with Sky Sports today, Johnston explained why it’s crucial he shows that side of himself, especially in a derby like that one.
He told the broadcaster [Sky Sports Main Event, 11:30]: “I think it’s important, not only for ourselves but for our fanbase that we show that it is more than just a football match. We understand there’s a lot that goes on between the history of these two clubs and it’s important that we don’t get pushed around in the scoreline or on the pitch.
“I take that with a bit of pride and it’s always something that’s been in my DNA. I like to mix it up a bit and I take a lot of joy in that, especially as a defender. So whenever there’s an opportunity or if I feel like someone’s trying to take advantage of one of our super technical players, then I’m going to go in there and stand up for them. That just shows the unity and the family spirit that we have at this club right now.”
These words will no doubt be received fantastically by supporters. This is exactly the kind of attitude we want from our Celtic players. Tough, but intelligent and with full awareness of the stakes involved. We need people like this in the squad to help the team get through big occasions.
Johnston isn’t all mouth either, he can play a bit too. And today he even popped up with his first Celtic goal after getting on the end of an Aaron Mooy cross. He’s going from strength to strength and producing good enough form to justify his place in the team, despite competition from Anthony Ralston.
While it’s still too early to make any definitive judgements on his signing, the early signs are that he’ll do just fine as an important part of Ange Postecoglou’s squad.
