Celtic defender Andrew Gutman not in USA squad to face Jamaica

Celtic defender Andrew Gutman has received a blow as he was omitted from the USA squad to face Jamaica on June 5th.

Gutman was originally announced in the provisional 40-man Gold Cup squad for his country (CONCACAF). It was his first international call-up, with the Gold Cup tournament kicking off later this month.

But with the Jamaica game acting as a pre-Gold Cup tournament preparation match, it doesn’t look like Gutman will be going to the competition as it stands. His omission for the Jamaica match has been confirmed (US Soccer).

The left-back, currently with Charlotte Independence, could still be called up for the Gold Cup squad. But the numbers will be whittled down from 40 to 23. And that’s why Gutman’s omission from the Jamaica friendly doesn’t bode well for his chances in being called up for the tournament proper.

Gutman has two goals and one assist after making 12 USL appearances for the Independence this season. But, with serious MLS competition in his position, it’s not really a surprise he misses out on the Jamaica cut.

It’s important to stress that no decision has been finalised on the Gold Cup squad. But if Gutman was being considered, you would’ve imagined that head coach Gregg Berhalter would want a look at him.

Plenty of time for Gutman

Celtic’s new left-back can take some real heart from this regardless of what happens. To receive his first call-up whilst playing USL football shows how highly he’s rated.

If he can make a name for himself at Parkhead, there’s simply no way he doesn’t start making international squads in the future. It’s perhaps too early given his lack of experience, but Gutman appears to have the world at his feet.

He’ll still have hopes of being selected for the Gold Cup regardless. The squad announcement will be made in the coming days, but not making the pre-Gold Cup friendly doesn’t read well for him.

His main priority afterward has to be helping Charlotte Independence out of the rut they’re on with Jim McGuinness. They now sit 16th in the 18-team Eastern Conference division of the competition. Their latest setback was a 4-1 mauling off Ottawa Fury just two days ago.

There’s work to be done by Gutman before he returns to Glasgow. Celtic still of course have the option to recall him this summer, but there’s no sign of that as of it.

Regardless, it’s important he looks at the positives of his call-up as opposed to the negative of not making the cut, if that indeed is the decision Berhalter makes.
