American international Cameron Carter-Vickers, as it turns out, has been an inspired loan signing by Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou.
At a time when Celtic desperately needed centre-backs, Carter-Vickers – in truth – needed a high profile spell of first-team football. He’d been impressive in England, not least with Bournemouth in the Championship.
However, the challenges of European football and being in a team expected to win routinely is something different. Even then, he looks immensely comfortable on the ball and off it.
Last night against Hibernian was possibly his best display yet. The American international managed to get on the scoresheet from an xG of 0.07, which is fun in and of itself. Defensively, though, he made several important contributions. His 3 interceptions were crucial, and he cleared the ball 9 times to remove danger [Fotmob].
In terms of his distribution, his display was stand-out. It’d be easy to point at his 96% success rate and suggest all of his passes were backwards or to the side. That wasn’t the case though. No less than 17 times, he moved the ball forwards in the opposition half.
That’s exactly what we need from a centre-back. Alongside the ever-improving Carl Starfelt, it feels like there’s a really solid pairing in the works at Parkhead. It’s certainly a far cry from the start of the season, that’s for sure.

Celtic fans respond to fantastic display from Cameron Carter-Vickers
Carter-Vickers was given special attention from the Celtic supporters on Twitter.
Just like Jota, the American international is at the club on loan, but the Bhoys have an option to buy. That means there’s a semblance of potential permanence, here, as opposed to many of the loan deals the club has done in recent seasons.
Clearly, judging by the response CCV is getting from fans on social media, his permanent signing would go down well:
Go on big man, heart and passion.
