Celtic defender Carl Starfelt has offered his support to Malmö man Felix Beijmer.

Beijmer, who played with Starfelt at IF Brommapojkarna, appeared on the Celtic defender’s Instagram story earlier on today.

Like Starfelt, Beijmer has taken an interesting route through his career so far. The right-back has enjoyed spells with Greuther Fürth, Werder Bremen and Djugarden. He moved to Malmö last season [Transfermarkt].

Tonight, of course, Malmö face Rangers. No doubt, that’s given Carl Starfelt a little extra motivation to show support for his friend.

Our cross-city rivals lost to Malmö last week, and face the Swedish side again at Ibrox tonight.

Pre-match build-up has been objectively amusing. Not only has Starfelt got in a potentially cheeky gesture, but Danish legend Jon Dahl Tomasson, now Malmö’s manager, got in an amazing dig at Rangers’ expense.

He told a press conference yesterday [Daily Record]:

“Don’t you think that [Rangers] need the Champions League’s money here? I think so. I think they need that. I think that’s a good answer, isn’t it? I think you all are clever lads so you understand it.”

Ice cold.

Celtic defender Carl Starfelt is only wishing a former teammate, now at Malmö, good luck before a game

Look, we’re sure this is entirely innocent.

It just so happens that Carl Starfelt’s former team-mate Felix Beijmo plays for Malmö. And, it just so happens that Malmö are playing our fiercest rivals tonight.

It really is all a coincidence. Although honestly, if it’s Carl Starfelt trying to endear himself to the Celtic supporters at the same time, then we’re all for it.

Starfelt has endured a shaky start to life at Celtic, but really grew into his role against Dundee. Confident on the ball, he was as likely to start a couple of moves as he was to end the opposition’s. In fact, for Celtic’s first goal on Sunday, he did both.

The former Rubin Kazan defender is coming to a new country, playing in a new system, under a new boss. With time, he has all the technical tools to be a very useful player for Celtic.

In the meantime, he’s probably aware he’ll get some flak from our rivals for this. Honestly, though, it’s unlikely to matter to him. It’s just two former teammates wishing each other the best, in fairness.

Still, though; I doubt he had to think twice about posting.
