Celtic defender Jack Hendry has bulked up and is in best shape of career at Oostende

Celtic defender Jack Hendry is relishing his big opportunity in the Belgian top-flight this season.

After suffering a horror knee injury on loan in Australia last year, nobody really knew what was in store for his career next.

It was always unlikely he was going to make it at Celtic Park and I have to admit I was even sceptical he would shine at Oostende.

However, he’s now even dreaming of a Scotland call-up, due to how impressive his progress has been on the continent.

The centre-half has also undergone something of a physical transformation.

He explained to The Scottish Sun this weekend: “When I was out with the injury and out in lockdown, I worked hard on my physical shape.

“I worked on my upper body, lower body, and got in the best place I could be physically. I wanted to be quicker, stronger and better. I have been really happy with what I’ve achieved.

“Now I feel physically in the best shape I’ve ever been, and mentally as well. We do tests over here and I’ve reached 35kmph, one of the top speeds they have come across.”

Hendry destined for permanent Celtic exit

Hendry has been almost ever-present in the Oostende first-team since September, making 18 appearances in total across the season.

They are now pushing for a European qualification spot.

There are also reports Oostende will look to exercise the £1.75m buy option in his loan deal, which could mean he’s leaving Celtic for good soon.

I never really thought Hendry was good enough at Celtic Park. However, it’s great to see him excel somewhere else, potentially landing us a bit of cash.

No doubt some fans may even be casting an envious eye abroad and thinking Hendry might be able to do a job for us.

That relationship seems broken right now, but who knows what the future holds?
