Celtic right-back Moritz Bauer has opened up on his translation skills after he showed off his multilingual side on Sunday.
Odsonne Edouard and Bauer were both taking part in a post-match interview on Celtic TV. The 3-1 win over Kilmarnock was Bauer’s first start for the club. He was standing with the two-goal hero too, so naturally, it was the right choice of player for the club to talk to.
But it turns out it was a crucial one too. French Eddy couldn’t quite make out a question or two from the interviewer. Up stepped Bauer to play the role of translator, as he explained what Edouard was trying to say.

However, it turns out that Bauer’s international tongue doesn’t just stop with French. Speaking to the Celtic View (Volume 55, Issue 12, Page 22), the Austrian opened up on how many languages he can speak.
“I speak four or five languages fluently – German, Swiss German, English, French, and I picked up some Russian when I lived in Russia. I can understand Italian and Spanish because they are close to French, and I speak fluent French.
“I had a coach one year who only spoke Spanish, so I had to pick that up. It converts from French quite a lot, so I am able to understand it.
“You always find it useful. The French guys here have a funny sense of humour and I’ve been able to enjoy that because I understand them. Sometimes people prefer to explain something in their native language and you can gain a better understanding of them if you can speak it.”
A talented man in more than one way
Speaking multiple languages is well-known to be a strong sign of intelligence. But the only thing that will make Bauer a success here is what he produces on the pitch.
Granted, how he conducts himself off it, and being able to speak fluent French with the French players from Parkhead can only be a good thing. Bauer clearly takes some pride in it, as he should do.

And he’s just another one of Neil Lennon’s signings to have seriously impressed the supporters since arriving. We haven’t seen much of him, but he’s done nothing wrong so far.
Bauer notched his first assist of the season on Sunday when he set up Edouard to make it 2-1. The positive attacking performance came after he produced an impressive cameo at Ibrox.

Interestingly, Bauer has shown no signs of shyness either. He’s clearly a confident player. Whether it be waving goodbye to the Rangers fans at Ibrox, or confidently stepping in as a club translator, he’s certainly a character.
First impressions aren’t always lasting, but they’re certainly vital. And it’s fair to say Bauer has made an extremely positive and impressive one.
