Wow: Shane Duffy had to watch from the bench as Ireland suffered arguably their worst-ever defeat.

The shock loss at the hands of Luxembourg surely ranks as one of the Republic’s most awful results. From a Celtic point of view, loan defender Shane Duffy was left out again. That’s despite manager Stephen Kenny talking the centre-back up to the press today.

A wonderful strike from Gerson Rodrigues separated the sides [WhoScored], with Kenny’s job surely under massive threat.

Even the BBC’s live-ticker couldn’t believe what was happening. At one point, an update simply read: “This is a shambles.”

For Duffy to not have even seen the pitch against Luxembourg is a bad sign in itself, but what a shocking result. The Luxembourg Men’s National Team are ranked 98th in the world by FIFA. Scary times indeed for the Republic, who might look for a new manager sooner rather than later.

A Celtic perspective as Ireland fall to utterly dismal defeat

Amongst the players making the wrong kind of history for the Republic of Ireland tonight were supposed transfer targets Robbie Brady and James McClean [Daily Record]. Both were powerless in tonight’s match, with McClean being rated an appalling 5.9 by WhoScored?.

We don’t expect Peter Lawwell to have been on the phone to either Burnley or Stoke City tonight.

Supporters and commentators react

Needless to say, the reaction on Twitter has been quite something:
