Oliver Burke’s situation at West Brom still looks bleak, but so does Celtic’s move for him.

That’s because, according to the Daily Record, he’s not Brendan Rodgers’ first option. Indeed, Celtic will only move for the £15million man should they miss out on other targets.

It’s interesting to hear that. Burke is primarily a right-sided midfielder, but can play down through the middle. Yet, Celtic have yet to be linked with any other right-winger heading into January.

It sounds as though the Hoops have other options down that flank that they’re monitoring. And if Burke isn’t a primary target, that should get supporters excited about who actually is on the club’s radar.

Any move for Burke would likely be a loan deal. Due to the fact WBA splashed out so much on him, they will still be keen on a return for it. A loan move to get the Scotland international firing could be exactly what he needs.

James Forrest needs proper competition

Meanwhile, Celtic are desperately needing some viable competition for James Forrest. Despite the fact that both Lewis Morgan and Jonny Hayes can play down the right, neither are ready to step up and play consistently.

For Hoops supporters, it would be ideal if the club could find someone to bring in permanently. Whilst Burke is an exciting prospect, Celtic don’t particularly need another club’s project when Rodgers is still trying to build a squad in Glasgow.

It’s also a blow for Burke, who could seriously be doing with a spell at the Scottish champions. It would be a great chance for him to kick-start his career once again, and at a bigger club than any he’s previously been at.

Competition has increased over the last 24-48 hours for his signature. The likes of Nottingham Forest and Millwall are looking to rival Celtic for the forward.

At this point, however, it looks as though Celtic’s interest is only minimal for now.

With other targets apparently in Rodgers’ mind, it’ll be interesting to see who comes through the door at Parkhead come the end of the month.
