Celtic have explained their thought processes behind the recent stadium makeover following a mixed reception online from supporters.

The Bhoys have replaced the wraps surrounding Celtic Park, which previously prominently featured photography of iconic players and moments from the club’s past.

The old banners looked a bit worse for wear, so replacing them isn’t an issue for most, but the look of the new design has been a subject of debate over the last week. Some fans have been left unhappy with the direction taken.

Celtic stated on social media this evening: “Moving away from the older photographic style, the strong green colour palette of the new stadium banners will ensure that Celtic Park’s iconic silhouette, both in the daytime and when lit up at night will retain its imposing presence in Glasgow’s East End.

“The Jock Stein and Lisbon Lions stands highlight Celtic’s position as both champions of Scotland, with captain Callum McGregor lifting the Premiership trophy, and celebrating the club’s historic status as European Cup winners with the iconic Billy McNeill trophy lift in 1967.

“A modular graphic approach has enabled us to weave together a huge selection of important iconography from the club’s rich history, celebrating our origins, iconic Celtic kits, badges and crests, alongside famous quotes, songs and achievements.”

Meanwhile, the club said on the official website: “The final designs were subject to a detailed design process over the last six months supported by Glasgow-based marketing & creative agency, Maguires, with further assistance from SNS Group and the Herald & Times.”

It should be pointed out that many people are also a fan of the new design. It hasn’t been universally panned. They just aren’t as popular as the initial unveiling of the original banners.

Personally, I don’t even think they’re too bad. I preferred the old design but trying something different isn’t a disaster and ultimately, it’s an issue well down the list of things I care too much about at the Bhoys.

In time, I’m sure those who don’t like the banners will warm up to them more.
