Perhaps the most exciting bit of news this pre-season has been the potential return of Henrik Larsson to Celtic.

The King has been linked with a return back to Parkhead as part of Neil Lennon’s coaching set-up (Scottish Sun). Johan Mjallby has also been linked with a return too as Lennon apparently considers his options.

Mjallby proved a terrific assistant to Lennon between 2010 and 2014, and therefore is a reliable option. But it’s the potential return of Larsson that will grip discussion amongst the Celtic support until the appointment is made.

Giving their reaction to the news on Twitter, the Hoops fanbase were split on what the move meant.

Where are the negatives here?

As far as many supporters are concerned, this is a deal that should get done. And they would be right too, as Larsson could have so much to offer at Parkhead as a first-team coach.

There is a case to argue if this is just sentimental. But all you have to do is look at Larsson’s achievements in the game to see why it isn’t just a bribe for the fans. Larsson is one of the most iconic names to ever play for Celtic, and has played for the likes of Barcelona and Manchester United respectively.

Larsson’s commitment to Celtic back in the 2000s probably came at the expense of more silverware at a bigger club. But the King of Kings had such affection and appreciation for the Hoops that he stayed on in Glasgow and became a club legend.

He’s worked with some of the best strikers and players football has had to offer. Larsson’s played alongside the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Samuel Eto’o and Ronaldinho to name a few. He’s done it all in the game, and his experience to the likes of Odsonne Edouard would therefore be invaluable.

Sure, Larsson’s career in management hasn’t exactly taken off. He underperformed with Landskrona Bois and relegated Helsingborg. But he wouldn’t be coming back as a football manager, he would be coming back in a totally different capacity.

So there aren’t any negatives to bringing Larsson back if he’s interested. But as it stands it still looks a little bit away before we can hang our hat on it.
