Celtic fans are slating UEFA’s insistence that the Nations League goes ahead in the midst of a global pandemic after Nir Bitton tested positive for COVID-19.
The competition, which has replaced the traditional schedule of international friendlies, has continued despite the risks related to the ongoing crisis.
The Scottish champions are clearly frustrated with the situation, stating on the official website: “While we apportion no blame whatsoever to anyone, this is now a very difficult position for us and, clearly, for all other clubs. Like all other clubs, we must do all we can to protect our squad and limit the very clear and obvious risks to players.
“Under FIFA regulations, clubs are obliged to release players for international duty.
“We will be maintaining close contact with international associations in order to ensure everything possible is being done with regards to the care and protection of our players. The priority must be the safety of our players at all times.”
Celtic stars have been travelling individually all over Europe to different countries, social groups and squads.
That is, in my opinion, creating a risky environment for our players, and it is outside of the club’s control.
It’s different to Champions League and Europa League travel because that is done as a group of people who are in close contact every day.
Celtic have confirmed players at Lennoxtown continue to return negative tests, suggesting there is no outbreak within Neil Lennon’s squad.
UEFA should have scheduled the playoffs for next year’s European Championships in early 2021 and called a halt to the Nations League group stage matches while clubs get to grips with keeping players safe.
Likewise, youth internationals should not be going ahead.
Common sense hasn’t prevailed so far, indicating the situation won’t change anytime soon.
