Some Celtic fans not pleased with Dedryck Boyata action against Rangers

Dedryck Boyata’s injury knock hasn’t gone down too well with sections of the Celtic support.

One of the biggest levelers yesterday against Rangers was when the big Belgian had to come off. With Rangers gaining momentum having just equalised through Ryan Kent, Boyata pulled up with his hamstring. With Celtic having used their three substitutions, it was leveled up at 10 vs 10.

Instead of playing on, Boyata also stayed on the ground during a dangerous Rangers attack. It led to their best chance of the game too when Ryan Jack stabbed over from close-range.

And many fans don’t seem too pleased about the Belgian, who’s out-of-contract this summer. Here’s a look at some of the reaction to this incident on Twitter.

Difficult to overly-criticise at the moment

Personally, I’m finding it difficult to call Boyata out too much on this one. If it’s a hamstring injury, that could easily see him miss the rest of the season. Therefore, he simply may not have had any strength to keep pushing in the closing stages.

But it would’ve been ideal if he could’ve at least given us a presence during that dangerous Rangers attack. Many players with hamstring injuries remain on their feet until the ball is out of play. At the very least, they know they need to remain an option until the ball is out. Boyata didn’t look interested in that.

Those wanting him to never play for the club again could now have gotten their wish. His contract is up at the end of the season. So far, there are no signs that he’s set to renew either.

Lennon said after the game to Celtic TV that his knock was a bad one. Therefore, it looks like his season and career at Parkhead could be over. And even if he was to return before the end of the campaign, would it be worth playing him as opposed to trying to find a new partnership for next season?

Boyata had a good first hour against Rangers ironically. Minus a sloppy pass or two, he was solid enough and had frustrated Alfredo Morelos up to the point where he lashed out. But coming off the way he did seems to have upset many supporters, and he’ll do well to recover from it.
