Ex-Celtic player and managerial giant Tommy Docherty has passed away at the age of 92.
According to the BBC, Docherty “passed away peacefully surrounded by his family at home” after a long battle with illness.
A beloved player and coach at clubs such as Preston North End and Arsenal, Docherty also made 25 appearances for Scotland between 1951 and 1959. He managed the national team from 1971 to 1972, before a spell at Manchester United, where he won the FA Cup in 1977.
Docherty also managed Porto, Derby County, QPR, Chelsea and clubs in Australia before retirement in 1988.
Born in the Gorbals, Docherty achieved a childhood dream by signing for the Bhoys in 1947. Although he only played 9 matches for the Bhoys, he always remained a fan of the club.
Speaking to the Glasgow Evening Times in 2017, Docherty said:
“I still remember going to my first Celtic versus Rangers game just before the war. The Celtic team was Kennaway, Hogg, Morrison, Geatons, Lyon, Paterson, Delaney, McDonald, Crum, Divers, and Murphy. You never forget something like that.”
