Former Celtic assistant manager Damien Duff has stepped down from his role with the Republic of Ireland (Sky Sports). Inevitably, the Hoops faithful have reacted with optimism.
Duff, formerly of Blackburn Rovers, Chelsea and Fulham, was said to be a huge influence in the Celtic dressing room last season. Fans have speculated that the absence of Duff has been a key factor in the Bhoys’ difficulties in 20-21.
No reason has been given for the former winger’s departure from the FAI set up. A Premier League winner with Chelsea, he left Celtic at the end of last season, citing “family reasons” (BBC).
Upon his exit from Stephen Kenny’s Ireland set-up, Duff said (Sky Sports):
“I want to thank Stephen Kenny for the opportunity he gave me to coach with the senior Ireland team and I wish Stephen, Keith and the players all the very best of luck for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers.”
Duff didn’t give a reason for leaving his post with the FAI, although according to Sky Sports:
“It is understood he was unhappy at an investigation launched into a video shown to the Ireland players before their friendly against England at Wembley in November last year.”

Celtic fans want Duff return
Celtic supporters liked Damien Duff during his time as Neil Lennon’s assistant. It’s clear that something is very different without him.
The Irishman was well-respected around Celtic Park, and perhaps his presence was the key ingredient in last year’s successful campaign.
The Celtic faithful were quick to jump on the news:
