Celtic have confirmed the appointment of Wilfried Nancy as their new manager.

Nancy, 47, has joined from Columbus Crew, where he has impressed in the MLS. He replaces Brendan Rodgers following his resignation.

Martin O’Neill and Shaun Maloney had taken charge on an interim basis, but will now step aside to allow Nancy to begin his work.

Alistair Johnston has previously worked with Nancy, who will now prepare for the challenge of chasing down Hearts in the Scottish Premiership, as well as competing in the Europa League.

In one word, how do you feel about Wilfried Nancy’s appointment

Celtic react as Wilfried Nancy confirmed

Celtic fans on X have made their opinions heard on the announcement, and the timing of it – and reactions are mixed.

Some are relieved that the wait is over, with one fan saying: “So the wait is finally over & we have appointed Wilfried Nancy as the club’s new manager.

“I’m looking forward to seeing what he brings to the club & wish him all the success in the world.

“Thank you, [Martin O’Neill], for everything!

@TenaciousCFC reassured fans with their pre-existing MLS knowledge, saying: “As someone with an extensive knowledge of MLS and in particular the Crew this is probably the single greatest coup in our illustrious history.

“Strap in, Bhoys; we’re in for a wild ride.”

Another fan thinks that the team’s form under O’Neill has perfectly set the stage for the Frenchman’s arrival.

He said: “Club is in a healthier place now thanks to MON, let’s hope Nancy can take this team to another level, gonna be a challenge but there is no reason why he can’t do it.”

So plenty of optimism over what is undoubtedly a left-field appointment.

But the timing of it – less than an hour before kick-off at Celtic Park against Dundee – has left some unhappy.

@ItIsMaynard said: “The is classless. Today should be all about Martin and the team.

“Should have at least waited until full time to release this.”

Not everyone has a good feeling about the appointment.

Another fan doesn’t agree with O’Neill’s departure, saying: “Should have kept Martin until the end of season or Christmas with the games we have coming up.”

Following the appointment, Nancy offered some comments on the club’s official website.

He said: “I am so happy to be named Celtic Manager, it is a massive honour for myself and my family.

“Before I say anything else I want to do one thing – I want to thank the great Martin O’Neill and Shaun Maloney for all they have done in recent weeks with the team. The job they have done has been fantastic.

““These guys have given so much to the club across so many years and I know our fans, like me, all recognise the brilliant job they have done during this recent period.

“They have my total respect and my total gratitude. I hope to meet them both very soon and thank them personally.”
