Marian Shved’s return to action yesterday seemed to take some in the Celtic support by surprise.

The Ukrainian hasn’t been in a matchday squad since the 3-1 win over Hearts back in August. Better yet, he hasn’t even been on the pitch since the 2-0 win at Nomme Kalju back in July.

There wasn’t really an explanation given for his continued absence. He did suffer an injury within that time that seemed to rule him out of Ukraine contention. However, Neil Lennon hasn’t been keeping fans updated with regards to his availability in his press conferences.

But fortunately, he made a surprise appearance yesterday against County. With the score at 5-0, Shved was introduced for the final 15 minutes, and was on the pitch when the sixth was scored. Reacting to his appearance post-match, here’s a look at some of the fan reaction:

An appearance out of nowhere for Shved – what does it mean?

Shved has the unfortunate position of being our back-up right-winger. That means that he plays second-fiddle to James Forrest. The same Forrest who Lenny will always select when fit.

He’s also had experience of playing as a striker. However, given the competition we have in that area of the pitch too, that also feels unrealistic.

Ryan Christie and Tom Rogic have the number 10 position nailed down, whilst there’s no point even discussing the left-wing competition he would have if he moved over.

Shved didn’t have the time to show too much yesterday. But he’ll be hoping this is a positive sign heading into the winter window. Forrest won’t play every single match there is, and Shved remains the only natural right-winger available in reserve.

Daniel Arzani is also still to return, but he’s naturally a left-sided winger. He’ll add to the competition already down the left with Mohamed Elyounoussi and Mikey Johnston the main choices.

But it’s a big boost to have Shved back in matchday squads to add a bit of competition to Forrest’s position. It’s going to be a difficult position in the team to make his own, but hopefully we see more of him in the coming weeks.
