Celtic fans tease the club after David Turnbull announcement

As Celtic announced the signing of Motherwell midfielder David Turnbull this afternoon, the Hoops support took the opportunity to have a pop at the club in a jovial (kind of) fashion.

Not even 24 hours after another humiliating exit from the Champions League qualifiers, the emotion inside everyone connected with the club is still raw.

Indeed, Ferencvaros’ 2-1 win at Celtic Park had fans furious in particular with the fact that Ryan Christie was forced to feature up front, with Neil Lennon playing with no recognised centre-forward.

And many in the support aren’t keen to forget it either. In response to the announcement of Turnbull today, some wondered just where else he could play outside of his favoured position:

No messing about – get him in vs Motherwell

As much as supporters are having a little pop (and there’s some severity mixed in with the jovial nature of the tweets), Turnbull should be given the freedom of Parkhead on Sunday against Motherwell.

In the last two matches, both Scott Brown and Callum McGregor have been ineffective as a pairing. In truth, it probably stretches back to the start of the season.

Turnbull, however, could easily thrive alongside McGregor in particular. Surely it’s time to give the captain some time out of the team and give what should be a fully-fit Turnbull an immediate debut.

Not only would it allow us to see how he integrates so early on with his new team-mates, but it would provide the supporters with a timely boost. Seeing the former Motherwell man feature in his debut so soon after signing is what we all want to see.

You also have the “former club” factor this Sunday. He’s bound to impress against the Steelmen, especially so soon after leaving them. He’ll know the Motherwell midfield inside out, and will know where the weaknesses lie.

The last thing we need here is for Turnbull to sit on the bench and watch on as Brown and McGregor struggle to impress. It does nothing for nobody.

Fingers crossed we get a good look at the new man on Sunday.
