Former Celtic winger Aiden McGeady has departed Hibernian.

The Republic of Ireland international is one of five players released at the end of the season, as confirmed by Hibernian on Wednesday.

McGeady made a total of 14 appearances in his one and only season with the Hibees, laying on two Premiership assists.

His final appearance of the season came in a 2-0 February win over Kilmarnock, where he suffered a serious hamstring injury.

At the time, Lee Johnson did intriguingly reveal that the trickster was doing a Sporting Director’s course, while McGeady is also known to be taking his coaching badges.

He has also already made some media appearances and it’s not too hard to imagine a future which sees him analysing Scottish football for Sky Sports.

McGeady has enjoyed a terrific playing career every since breaking through into Martin O’Neill’s Celtic side in 2004.

Since then, he has featured for the likes of Spartak Moscow, Everton and Sunderland and earned 93 international caps.

It will be interesting to see if he now looks to prolong his playing career or move into a non-playing role.

The prospect of him acting as a Sporting Director is an intriguing one, given the lack of players who go down that route after retiring.

He’s likely to be a success at whatever he does, and will always be welcome back at Celtic Park.
