Celtic FC Women have thrashed St Johnstone 6-0 in the SWPL Cup today, picking up their first competitive win of the new professional era.

After disappointingly drawing 0-0 with Glasgow Women in their first group cup match last week, new Head Coach Fran Alonso and his team put that right today with a dominating performance at McDiarmid Park.

A Sarah Ewens hat-trick was the stand-out individual display, with goals from new signing Summer Green, Rachel Donaldson and an own goal all adding to the impressiveness of the win.

Ewens was one of five existing Celts to put pen to paper on professional terms last month and is clearly already paying that back with her superb showing today.

After scoring 22 goals last season, she’ll be key in any trophy push.

This is a pivotal season for the women’s team with the club stating that a ‘significant investment’ has been made in expanding the scope of the coaching staff and playing personnel by turning professional for the 2020 campaign.

Alonso has experience of coaching with men’s English Premier League sides and looks to be raising standards already.

It seems likely that the club initiative will attract even more fans to the women’s team and hopefully they get a bump in popularity and support as a reward for their hard work.

If you fancy seeing them in action soon, you have a great chance this week with their opening league match of the season being shown live on BBC Alba this coming Friday night at 7:30 pm against the established Glasgow City.

Celtic were on fine form during the last encounter between the two sides, winning 4-1 and ending their 72-game unbeaten league run.

With a new era dawning in the Scottish game, Celtic FC Women will be looking to impress on television under the lights.
