Former Celtic defender Efe Ambrose is wanted by Hibs and St Johnstone, according to the Scottish Mail on Sunday.
The Scottish Premiership sides want to bring the Nigerian international in as a free agent.
Ambrose made no secret that a move back Scotland could be on the cards for him. However, there will be Hoops fans very happy that Neil Lennon isn’t bringing him back to the club.
Efe Ambrose in Scottish Premiership tug of war
The defensive frailties of both Hibs and St Johnstone are very well known.
Hibs are back scoring but they are still conceding a lot but are seeking to change that…or are they?
The Scottish Mail on Sunday reported yesterday [pg.115] that Jack Ross’ side and the Perth Saints want Ambrose. He is without a club since not playing under Frank Lampard’s Derby County last season.
There were suggestions by Ambrose himself that he wouldn’t rule out a return to Scottish football. This got some Celtic supporters uneasy that Ambrose would be coming back under his old manager Lennon for cover.
The 31-year-old had too many hearts in mouths over the years in Glasgow’s green and white. Even as a squad player, there would have been too many fears that bad luck would end up with Ambrose in the team.
Hoops should take advantage of Scottish defensive downturn
There are reportedly two clubs looking for a cheap centre-back. Ambrose is available on a free and one of the interested parties will likely miss out on him.
Celtic could use the defensive weaknesses in others to help their own players progress.
Lennon should be looking to send fringe players on loan to the likes of Hibs and St Johnstone. The pair will be looking for top idealistic players to come in and do a job at least until the end of the season.
Jack Hendry and Lee O’Connor are two names that will not be breaking into the first team any time soon. Ross and Tommy Wright would bite Lennon’s hand off to bring them into their teams on loan.
It’s a definitely an avenue to explore as it’ll be a greater challenge to what they are facing now.
