Chris Sutton has fired a warning to Reo Hatate and told him Celtic boss Martin O’Neill will not put up with his ‘strop’.

The Celtic midfielder is having one of his worst seasons ever as Hatate drops in and out of the Hoops starting line-up.

Once an ever-present and central to Celtic’s success, Hatate now looks a shadow of the player who used to run riot against the likes of Rangers in his first season in Scotland.

And after his performance in Celtic’s win over Livingston, Hoops hero Chris Sutton has warned Hatate that he had better buck up his ideas or he will feel the wrath of Martin O’Neill.

Chris Sutton slams ‘stroppy’ Celtic star Reo Hatate

Hatate has been linked to a Celtic exit over the last 48 hours and Sutton reckons that could happen sooner rather than later if the Japan midfielder doesn’t buck up his ideas.

Sutton wrote in the Daily Record, “I’m less optimistic about Reo Hatate’s chances of staying in the side. He was poor for the penalty against Livingston and his form has taken a major dip in general.

“Hatate looks to me as if he’s in a strop, like he doesn’t want to be there. If he is, I can tell him that O’Neill simply won’t have it.

“He’ll be out of the team. O’Neill has no time for players skulking around. Hatate might think he should be elsewhere but he needs to realise prospective clubs will be scouting him right now.

“Will they be impressed with what they are seeing? Unlikely.”

Sutton tells Hatate to ‘get the head down’ to win big Celtic exit

Celtic fans will remember Hatate’s first 18 months at the club. The Japanese star was sensational as he drove the Hoops to a double, and then a treble the following season.

And Sutton has urged him to get back to that form to drive Celtic towards this season’s title.

“It’s in Hatate’s interest to get the head down and help drive Celtic towards this title,’ Sutton continued, “otherwise there’s not going to be much of a stampede for his services.

“Like O’Neill said the other night, it wasn’t so long ago he was one of the best players in the country and worth his weight in gold.

“Right now, he’s barely worth a place in the squad.”

Hatate was once one of the most coveted talents in Scottish football as he dazzled domestically and in the Champions League.

But now, he would be lucky to make the starting XI as Hatate struggles to recapture the form that made him an instant hero in the eyes of the Celtic support.
