Reo Hatate has become a crucial player for Celtic and one of the first names on the teamsheet.
Brendan Rodgers has made a trophy-winning return to Celtic and he should have Ange Postecoglou to thank also.
The reason is that several of his signings, including Hatate, have been crucial to Celtic’s success and continued dominance this season.
Hatate joined Celtic from Kawasaki Frontale in 2021 and it was his first foray outside of Japan and playing in Europe.
On paper, it has been pure dominance for the midfielder, in terms of trophies and wins over Rangers.
But sometimes you don’t see what’s happening behind the scenes and Hatate admitted that the early stages of his Celtic career was a struggle.
And now he has opened up about one of his struggles, in regards to communication, especially with a certain Callum McGregor as captain.
Reo Hatate’s struggles trying to understand the Scottish accent
For foreign players, it’s understandable how difficult it can be to pick up the Scottish accent, especially given that it’s rich and deep.
Hatate, who shared that he is working hard to ‘keep studying English’, admitted that it has been a struggle to understand.
Given that McGregor is the Celtic skipper, then you suspect that he is doing quite a lot of talking, not forgetting that he plays alongside him in midfield, so communication with him is perhaps the most important.
The Japan star shared what happens when he is communicating with some of his teammates or those Scottish-based players, coaches and staff members at the club, as he told Celtic TV.

“The accent is definitely tough,” said Hatate. “During matches, when I communicate with my teammates, they often abbreviate my message and respond ten times faster than expected, which can be hard to understand.
“But I have realised how crucial it is to communicate effectively on the pitch. It made me feel strongly that I need to keep studying English to communicate better with the team.”
Hatate’s Celtic career
The all-action midfielder is a joy to watch and when he gets the ball at his feet, he can glide through and get fans off their seats.
He may struggle to understand what some say at the club, but one thing is for sure, everyone understands what he does on the pitch.
Hatate talks and performs like he is one of the best midfielders in the country. Added to how he has been one of the best signings of the club’s modern era.
Six trophies in Celtic colours and counting, including a Treble season, it wouldn’t be a surprise if the latter is repeated again, with over 100 appearances already locked in for the player, as posted by Transfermarkt.
