Celtic’s interim financial results statement included a few interesting little tidbits for supporters and observers of the club to take note of.

Obviously, the headline figures of increased revenue and a remarkable £50m-plus cash total sitting in the bank have taken many’s attention.

However, the club again mentioned the Barrowfield redevelopment – as we discussed earlier. Elsewhere, there was an interesting and perhaps rather pointed reference to Celtic’s participation in Europe.

Club chairman Peter Lawwell said [Celtic FC]: “We will also continue to contribute to the development of UEFA European Club Competition through participation in the European Club Association.

“The forthcoming changes to European Club Competition from 2024 onwards bring a number of exciting changes that we will embrace and look to take advantage of.”

It comes amidst fresh reports of a renewed push for a European Super League outside of UEFA’s jurisdiction which could target between 60 and 80 clubs, including Celtic.

The Bhoys have been steadfast allies of the European Club Association for years, which looks dimly on any Super League proposals, so Celtic’s public stance isn’t much of a surprise.

It would be pragmatic of the club to keep an open mind on developments in case there are any opportunities to pursue.

Super League proposals have been deeply controversial in the past and, in honesty, latest leaks suggest a confused look at the landscape of European football. But you can never say never with these kinds of things.

From 2024, the UEFA Champions League group stage format is undergoing radical change with each club playing eight matches and being ranked into a massive 36-team table which will determine qualification into the knockout rounds or parachuting into a lesser tournament.
