Celtic have been named as one of the teams interested in Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper Cameron Dawson but we could face some familiar competition for his signature, according to a report.

The Sheffield Star name Neil Lennon’s men as being in for the 24-year-old who’s contract is up at Hillsborough at the end of this season.

Dawson is Wednesday’s first-choice keeper, having played their last eleven matches, while he has enjoyed earlier career spells at Chesterfield, Wycombe and Alfreton.

The report names fellow Championship sides Derby County and Blackburn Rovers as being in for Dawson, while our city rivals Rangers are also mentioned in the same breath as ourselves.

Dawson does fit the criteria for a common Celtic signing

You’re always wary about an English-based report that links both ourselves and Rangers with a player. We’ve already seen it with a number of names both this month and back in the summer.

It seems a little too easy for ourselves and Rangers just to be thrown in the mix for any old player by English publications.

But the fact the report comes from a paper local to Wednesday does make it a little intriguing. Dawson also fits the criteria that we would be looking for in a goalkeeper.

He still has his best years ahead of him at 24, but has already made himself a regular at a good level.

The fact that his current deal is up in the summer is also something that would likely interest our board.

However, it does seem like Dawson is keen to stay at Wednesday, if his comments in the Sheffield Star are anything to go by.

“We are in dialogue with the club about it [contract] now,” he said. “I want a quick resolution as much as anyone does.

“I like things done. I don’t like it when things drag on. Hopefully we will get things done and we can quickly move forward.”

There may be very little in this one. But the name Cameron Dawson is one paying attention to this month anyway.
