Celtic have announced a new tribute to club legend Billy McNeill that will be part of this year’s Foundation Christmas appeal.

On Saturday afternoon, many Celtic legends and supporters turned out in their numbers to see a new statue unveiled of McNeill.

After the brilliant work conducted by the Billy McNeill Commemoration Committee, there now sits a new statue of the former Hoops captain in his hometown of Bellshill.

This project has been in the works since McNeill’s sad passing in 2019 after a long battle with dementia, and over £70,000 was donated.

Celtic icons, including Lisbon Lions John Clark and Jim Craig, were in attendance, as well as other club legends, such as Danny McGrain and Tom Boyd, with many local supporters turning out to see the unveiling last weekend.

To celebrate the special commemoration for McNeill, the club have announced a new tribute to one of the greatest ever Celts, which will be in collaboration with the Foundations charity Christmas appeal.

A new T-shirt has been launched, which pays tribute to McNeill and the moment he lifted the European cup, which will always be regarded as the club’s greatest achievement.

The T-shirt has been inspired by the new design of the banners outside of Celtic Park, and with the blessing of the McNeill family, the foundation logo is accompanied by a quote from the man himself – “There’s a fairytale about this Club’ – together with an iconic image of him lifting the European Cup.”

Supporters are now able to purchase this new item at the Celtic Superstore or online, with net proceeds being devoted to the club’s 2022 Christmas appeal.

Over the past few years, we have seen some fantastic initiatives set up by the Celtic Foundation in order to support families at this difficult time of year.

Last December, the club released a similar tribute to another club legend, Tommy Burns, with supporters able to pick up commemorative merchandise whilst contributing to the Christmas appeal.

These excellent ventures to raise money for charity have become a staple at Celtic, following the traditions and principles from when the club was founded.

The Celtic foundation continues to come up with new ways to donate to charity at this time of year, and supporters will be happy to contribute if possible this winter.
