Celtic’s opening match of the Scottish Premiership season could be played on a Monday, it is being reported.

As Scottish Premiership champions, Martin O’Neill’s men are expected to play at home on the opening weekend of the season.

In recent years, this has often been played in the primetime slot on the Sunday, but this could change this year.

This is due to police resources being stretched on a busy weekend in Glasgow.

Commonwealth Games and Calvin Harris gig could force Celtic flag day to be played on Monday August 3

According to the Scottish Sun, Commonwealth Games events at the Chris Hoy Velodrome in the Glasgow International Arena (formerly known as the Emirates Arena) are complicating matters.

The velodrome will be hosting events on both the Saturday and the Sunday as part of the Games.

Police resources are further stretched by the two Calvin Harris concerts taking place at Hampden on the Saturday and Sunday evenings.

According to the report, the only solution other than moving the game to the Monday is breaking from tradition by handing Celtic an away league opener.

SPFL bosses are reportedly in talks with the various authorities and stakeholders over the plan of action.

It’s not the first time that Celtic have been inconvenienced by the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. In fact, things were even more disruptive in 2014.

The Hoops’ crucial Champions League qualifiers against Reykjavik and Legia Warsaw were moved all the way to Murrayfield in Edinburgh due to Parkhead’s use for the opening ceremony.

The Hoops’ league opener was also played away from home against St Johnstone, unusually in a midweek fixture.

No further disruptions would be expected this season, as the Games conclude on the weekend of Celtic’s Premiership opener.

Celtic Park could host Oasis concert in 2027

Celtic Park could also be used in an Oasis tour in 2027.

A source told the Sunday Mail last month: “Nothing has been finalised and it is early days, but the Gallagher brothers are very keen to tour in 2027 and a return to Scotland would be a no-brainer if a deal can be done.

“There has been talk of new songs, and the 2025 gigs were a massive success globally, so who wouldn’t want to continue.

“Playing Murrayfield again could be a possibility, and Hampden Park is also in contention, but Liam and Noel are big Celtic fans, and they would love to play Celtic Park.

“Their mum Peggy was born in Ireland and is a huge Celtic supporter, so if a deal could be done to play Parkhead, they would be delighted.

“Things are at an early stage but there would be the potential for stadiums to be free towards the end of May.”
