Celtic legend Frank McAvennie has expressed an opinion which could spilt the Hoops’ support down the middle. He feels that Celtic should prioritise qualifying for the Champions League, and put all talk about going for nine in a row on the back burner.

McAvennie also believes that Neil Lennon will believe that at the moment, the only thing worth thinking about are the Champions League qualifiers.

“All the talk right now is about Celtic going for nine in a now – but that’s dangerous. Celtic need to be switched on on all fronts” he said, as reported by the Scottish Sun.

“This is a huge Champions League campaign for Celtic after what happened last year and Neil will know that better than anyone.”

A huge boost financially

Financially it would be a huge boost to the Hoops if they made the group stages after missing out last season. However, some fans may feel that winning the league is far more important than Europe this season.

Winning nine in a row is naturally the target at the start of the season. However, that should not mean giving up on Europe, or playing reserve teams in the group stages of the Europa League, for example.

The European football vs domestic football debate is one that looks set to run and run at Celtic this season. At the moment qualifying for the Champions League looks to be the most important thing. Depending on results though, that could change.
