Celtic legend Kenny Dalglish has announced that he is receiving treatment for cancer.

The 75-year-old confirmed the diagnosis on social media on Tuesday, having accidentally posted about his treatment earlier in the day.

Dalglish and Liverpool have requested privacy for his family as he has not intended to make the news public.

The legendary ex-forward made 338 Celtic appearances, establishing his status as a Parkhead great before joining Liverpool in 1978.

“Ideally, this would have remained private because that’s the way it should be, but my useless technology skills have forced my hand.

“Obviously I did not mean to make this matter public so I would appreciate it if the privacy of my family and myself are respected.

“As ever, thank you to the wonderful medical staff who have shown incredible care and discretion, not just for me but for many, many others. They are a credit to themselves.”

Liverpool said in a statement: “The support, best wishes and love of everyone at Liverpool FC are, and will continue to be, with Sir Kenny and his family.

“The club would also like to underscore his request for privacy moving forward.”

Dalglish is seen as the star of Celtic’s Quality Street Gang.

Whilst Jock Stein was leading his Lisbon Lions to the summit of European football, there was some serious talent brewing in the Celts’ reserve side.

Danny McGrain, Davie Hay and Lou Macari were among the future Scotland internationals who were teenagers when Celtic beat Inter in Lisbon.

Given the greatness of that side and Stein in particular, it isn’t a surprise that their talent went on to shine after being brought under the wing of the first team.

Dalglish later worked as director of football and later manager at Celtic Park in the 1999-2000 season, winning the Scottish League Cup during his brief time in the dugout.
