Celtic legend Kenny Dalglish left baffled by media’s absurd Ange Postecoglou angle

Celtic legend Kenny Dalglish has questioned why Ange Postecoglou would leave the Paradise hot-seat to fight relegation in the Premier League amidst absurd chatter around the Leicester City job in recent days.

It isn’t the first time the Aussie has been talked about regarding a move to England’s top flight, with links to the then-vacant Brighton job extinguished after the south-coast club appointed Roberto De Zerbi, and Dalglish isn’t surprised that there’s interest in Postecoglou.

In his column for The Sunday Post, Dalglish wrote: “Ange has been at the centre of some speculation, due the excellent job he has been doing at Celtic. Before Graham Potter left Brighton for Chelsea recently, by all accounts Ange was a name on Albion’s short-list.

“Now he is still being mentioned in England as a contender for the Leicester City job, should there be a parting of the ways with Brendan Rodgers. For me, though, that is a non-starter. Why would Ange want to leave Celtic to go there?

“Why would he leave a Champions League club for a team that may well end up fighting a relegation battle in the Premier League? So I would doubt that Ange would have a club such as Leicester City on his radar.”

Dalglish cited the relationship that Postecoglou has built with the Celtic fanbase as special incentive for him to remain in Glasgow, but also wondered if bigger clubs may come calling for the Aussie in future.

He wrote: “He has rebuilt Celtic. The fans love him, and he loves the fans. It would take something special to break up that relationship.

“If he was linked with a top-six club down south, then that may well be a different story. That kind of thing would be a potential game-changer. But, for now, I think he will be fully focused on Celtic and trying to retain the SPFL title.”

Whilst it’s understandable that Postecoglou’s exploits at Celtic have earned him some admirers in the Premier League, he’s unlikely to be swayed by the offers on the table so early into his managerial career in Paradise.

With Celtic’s Champions League group stage campaign only a third done, a title to defend and two domestic trophies to win, it would have to be a spectacular job to tempt the Aussie from his new home.

Even then, with England’s top six clubs all either recently appointing new managers or with elite coaches already in situ, there’s no need for any immediate concern about Postecoglou’s future.
