Rafa Benitez’s conversation with Newcastle owner Mike Ashley is set to rumble on to the weekend. Eurosport reports that the Spaniard met with Ashley and Lee Charnley to discuss his current contractual situation.

The 59 year-old’s deal at St. James’ Park runs out on the 30th of June with Celtic rumoured to be interested if a new agreement can’t be signed.
Benitez would be a popular appointment at Celtic Park with fans keen to see another blockbuster name in charge.

Can Celtic afford to wait?
The Hoops may want to hold out for Benitez but they must also have a timescale in mind. The Spaniard’s discussions with Newcastle have the potential to drag on for days and Celtic don’t have that time to waste. We need to have a manager ready to be announced as soon after the Scottish Cup final as possible.

With vital qualifiers in less than two months and a squad in dire need of repair, the new boss has his work cut out.
Time will tell whether Celtic have someone waiting in the wings. Time will also tell whether that man is Benitez.
