Celtic-linked Bright Osayi-Samuel in talks over new QPR deal

Celtic-linked winger Bright Osayi-Samuel is currently in contract talks with QPR, manager Mark Warburton has confirmed.

The Scottish Sun reported earlier this month that Neil Lennon wanted a deal done for the Nigerian winger before the end of the current transfer window on October 5th. Celtic Head of Recruitment Gary Penrice was also said to be at the heart of the move.

Yet there’s been no progress since that report from the Sun, and Osayi-Samuel has continued to play on a weekly-basis for QPR. In his latest outing against Middlesbrough, the winger netted an equaliser to help seal a point for Warburton’s side.

And now he’s currently in discussions to sign a new deal despite it looking as though he was for the off earlier this summer.

As quoted by the Ealing Times, Warburton said: “With the players who are out of contract at the end of the season, there are discussions going on with Les Ferdinand, Lee Hoos and the board.

“Those discussions are at varying stages, so Bright is in discussion but is at a different stage to Joe or to Ryan (Manning) in those discussions.

“My selection will always reflect where these conversations are at. They are valuable QPR players who have all been training well, and they are ready and available for selection if called upon.”

Is Lennon even looking for a right winger anymore?

It was interesting to note Lennon’s comments in the Scottish Sun after Sunday’s convincing 3-0 win over Hibs. When talking about transfers, the Hoops boss said that “we want to add maybe just one to the squad.”

Given Celtic’s long drawn out interest in Alfie Doughty (Daily Record) as well as our glaring need for another left-sided wing-back, it could be the case that Lennon is no longer as interested in another right-winger.

It would make sense too given the fact Celtic are now operating with a 3-5-2. It’s allowed Jeremie Frimpong to effectively rival James Forrest and provide him with some genuine competition.

Then again, whilst naturally a right-winger, Osayi-Samuel can also play down the left too. He’s played there twice for QPR this season so far (Transfermarkt). Whether he has the capabilities to play as a left wing-back however is up for debate.

If Celtic are only going to bring one more in this summer, it needs to be someone who can do the defensive work down the left side just as well as they can attack. Osayi-Samuel isn’t exactly known for his defensive prowess.

And with the player in contract talks ahead of the window closing, Celtic will need to move quickly as any chance of nabbing him for free in January looks like fading.

In other news, rival fans have been getting themselves wound up by a potential Celtic loan deal.
