One transfer deal that can officially be ruled out today is Carl Jenkinson to Celtic.

The former Arsenal right-back has completed a move to Championship outfit Nottingham Forest on a three-year contract. The Englishman moves down to the Championship for an undisclosed fee.

The City Ground outfit confirmed the deal on their social media channels early this afternoon. And, yet again, we have to put yet another cross through a Celtic-linked name.

Jenkinson was speculated as a player who was interesting the Hoops less than two months ago. The Daily Mail confirmed back on June 16th (back page) that he was a potential option for Neil Lennon.

Instead, however, the move to Forest has been agreed, with Celtic never having been reported as making an official offer.

Jenkinson to Celtic never seemed likely after Elhamed signing

The problem Celtic now have in their right-back search is finding one who’ll be happy to come in as a back-up player initially. Sure, the opportunity is there to challenge Hatem Abd Elhamed, but the Israeli will clearly be first-choice.

We already saw Danny Simpson cancel a trial at Lennoxtown because of Elhamed’s signing (Scottish Sun). Lennon would even confirm that it was because he wouldn’t be ahead of the new man.

And that’s the problematic situation we now find ourselves in as we look for quality competition for Elhamed. A move for Jenkinson looked a lot more likely before we signed the former Hapoel Be’er Sheva man. But would the new Nottingham Forest defender have been happy to come and be a number two to anyone? Unlikely.

So now we find ourselves having to cross yet another name off the list. There doesn’t appear to be a back-up right-back coming in anytime soon. With huge matches coming up over the next few weeks, however, we could do with getting another one in ASAP.

But we know one thing’s for sure – it won’t be Jenkinson.
