It’s been announced today that Crystal Palace and Roy Hodgson will be going their separate ways at the end of the season.
Oh dear. Looks like we won’t be getting Eddie Howe then. Indeed, the panic has already set in from some as they fear Howe taking the job at Selhurst Park despite months of speculation linking him with a move to Parkhead.
You can understand the fear. It’s a Premier League club, and one that reportedly has Howe on their list of candidates to replace Hodgson [Daily Mirror]. Considering the saga with Celtic has been dragging out, that certainly hasn’t helped matters.
But it’s important to put it into perspective. Only last week did reliable Celtic-informed journalist Stephen McGowan report on Howe’s current situation. He was speaking on Graham Spiers’ Press Box Podcast [13/05], and he provided an update on Howe’s stance on the Palace job:
“No, I don’t believe that [that Howe’s angling for a Premier League club]. That’s not my information at all. I know somebody who is in the Eddie Howe camp who is quite emphatic on that point. He’s done the lower reaches of English football for a number of years.
“With Eddie Howe, the information appears to be he doesn’t particularly fancy the Crystal Palace situation. Listen, if they offer him £4m a year, I’m sure he would quickly grow accustomed to the idea, but I think he quite fancies the possibility of having a crack at Europe, challenging for titles, challenging for trophies.
“When you say to people in the Eddie Howe camp he’s waiting for Palace, Brighton or Newcastle – they couldn’t be more emphatic that no, that’s not the case. That said, he clearly has a few stipulations he wants in place before he comes.”
Howe to Crystal Palace looks a lot more unlikely than Howe to Celtic
The latest reports on Howe to Celtic is that he’s waiting for Bournemouth’s season to end. This is in order to bring some of his backroom team from the Cherries with him to Celtic Park [Daily Record].
We could do with trying to not panic too much regarding whether he’s actually coming to the club. It’s clear discussions are so far down the line that it would be absolutely incredible if he wasn’t announced as the new manager.
Remember, the new boss can easily still do some scouting and work behind the scenes before he’s appointed. It’s not as if Howe is sitting twiddling his thumbs and has been doing so for the last few months. When he’s appointed, and it looks a lot more like when and not if, he should have some targets in mind for the club to immediately go and look at.
Hodgson always looked like leaving Palace regardless. It’s not as if this update today is some sort of blockbuster announcement that nobody could’ve foreseen. Are we going to just press the panic button every time an English club parts company with their boss?
By all accounts, Howe to Celtic looks a lot more likely to happen than not. So it’s time to start getting excited about what the coming summer and season ahead is going to bring.
Hopefully, this can all get wrapped up as soon as possible and put everyone at ease. But as for today’s announcement? Don’t panic.
