Once linked central-defender Phil Jagielka won’t be moving to Celtic this summer.

The 36-year-old former England international was rumoured to be interesting Neil Lennon after being released from Everton at the end of the season. However, Jagielka has since re-signed for Sheffield United – the club where he started his career back in 2000.

At the start of June, the Sun reported that Celtic were after the defender following his release from the Toffees. However, Celtic quickly distanced themselves from any chat and the trail soon went cold.

Lennon instead turned to Toulouse man Christopher Jullien while there have also been recent rumours about Hapoel Beer Sheva man Hatem Abd Elhamed.

Celtic have done well to resist Jagielka temptation

Celtic fans have been left pretty impressed by the business Lennon and his recruitment team have done so far this summer. There was a real worry that the club would take a backseat in the market following the Northern Irishman’s appointment.

In his first spell, he had a tendency to try and sign renowned British players – like Joe Ledley and Gary Hooper. While those men were undoubtedly successes in the Hoops, it’s nice to see us casting our net wider this time around.

It’s pleasing to see the club take no interest in the likes of Jagielka who are clearly past it. Instead we are looking for hungry players who can still have room to improve.

All three of our summer signings to date fit that criteria and it’s really pleasing to see. More of the same please Celtic.
