Taiwo Awoniyi, the Liverpool-owned striker said to be interesting Celtic, has been given a massive compliment by being compared to Dortmund megastar Erling Haaland.

90Min reported last week that the Hoops and Rangers were “leading the chase” for his signature. This comes after a fine campaign so far with Union Berlin in the Bundesliga. Awoniyi has bagged a fine eight direct goal contributions in only 15 appearances (Transfermarkt).

However, Liverpool have struggled to get the Nigerian forward a work-permit. 90Min report that this has therefore seen them open to the possibility of selling in order to bank a cool £5million.

And it appears Awoniyi is attracting plenty of admirers from Germany too. German football expert Constantin Eckner has been singing his praises on Liverpool Echo podcast Blood Red. Touching on Awoniyi, here’s what Eckner had to say:

“I think he’s found his level there, he’s what you would call a utility player, so he is perfect for the role they’ve given him. He works quite well for the Union Berlin system, which is also kind of direct, a lot of vertical passes, he makes a number of runs behind the backline.

A new dawn beckons for Celtic in Europe, as Joe Hart shows his class once again

“In a way he reminds me of Erling Haaland with the runs he makes behind the line.

“Of course, he’s nowhere near the level of Erling Haaland, but just his style is somewhat similar, and he’s a good, not great poacher inside the box, he’s a decent finisher at least.”

Taiwo Awoniyi can take confidence from Erling Haaland compliment, but will Celtic go for a new striker?

The first thing that comes into my mind here is whether we actually need another striker. That sounds bizarre to say considering not one of them has managed a consistent run of form this season.

But even so, I’m struggling to see Celtic move for another front-man anytime soon. Especially considering they’ve already spluttered £5m on Albian Ajeti (Sky Sports). With Odsonne Edouard and Leigh Griffiths leading the line too and Patryk Klimala also available, we have depth. Time will tell whether it’s strength, however.

T his could be worth visiting come the summer time. In truth that would always be the ideal time to get him considering we don’t know the details of Liverpool’s loan agreement with Union Berlin.

A work permit could also be easier to obtain given his game-time in Germany. With Edouard most likely to leave in the aummer with 12 months remaining on his contract, a replacement will be needed.

And Celtic fans will want some decent cash to be spent on that replacement too. Something that they would clearly have to do to attract the productive forward.

It’s perhaps a discussion for another day. We have bigger priorities at the club just now, but in the long-term, another striker is going to be a necessity.

In other news, Celtic could receive a boost regarding Kris Ajer’s short-term future.
