Victor Wanyama’s return to Celtic can be deemed even more doubtful after his latest comments on his future.
Wanyama previously opened up on a failed move to Club Brugge after the transfer window closed (All Africa). He was also linked with Celtic, as Neil Lennon claimed he was interested in making a move for the Kenyan (Scottish Sun).
Spurs signed big Vic back in 2016 from Southampton for £11million (BBC). The midfield powerhouse has been a success with the North London club, but has struggled to make an impact this season.
Wanyama has just three outings to his name this season, and only one start. But speaking to Goal about his future, he still doesn’t seem to have his eyes on anywhere other than North London.
“Of course I was unsettled with the transfer news because it was coming in the news every day. What happened in the transfer window is passed me now and my main focus is to train as hard as I can to make sure I regain my position in the team.
“I don’t think it is difficult to win my position back, I just need to push myself even harder and keep working hard in training to achieve the same and I know it will happen soon.”
Celtic want Wanyama, but domestic success can be achieved without him
It’s clear we all want Wanyama back at Parkhead. He would be a superstar signing, and exactly the kind of ambitious move the Hoops fans want from the club from time to time.
However, there’s also no denying that Celtic can still achieve big things without him. If the move doesn’t happen in January, we still have a midfield capable of taking us to within one title of 10-in-a-row.
Sure, having big Vic back at the club would be surreal. He would instantly be the most high-profile player Scottish football has. But if his heart is in winning his place back in the Tottenham squad, it will be hard to lure him back.
Wanyama also clearly sees a future in London too. There’s been no sulking since the window closed. He seems confident that he can add to his one start this season in the next couple of months.
However, Celtic should also be keeping close tabs on his situation. It’s not too long before the January window ends up rolling around. If Wanyama is still in the same situation as he currently is, then it’s worth having another punt on him.
But his comments add further doubt onto whether he has his eyes truly fixated on a move back to Scotland. Until we have a bid accepted, we have nothing to tempt the Kenyan international with.
