Craig Gordon is going to need to have a decision made about his future as soon as possible.
The Hoops shot-stopper has been out of the team since December. He produced a stunning one-man show against Rangers at Ibrox, before then being dropped for Scott Bain. Bain’s introduction to the team has led to an extended run for the former Dundee man, who can now be considered Celtic’s number one.
It also comes after Gordon was the subject of interest from Chelsea last year (BBC). His place in the team is going to be difficult to win back, even if Bain made a couple of poor mistakes before the end of the campaign.

But one thing that’s been flying under the radar recently is Gordon’s current contract at the club. The former Hearts and Sunderland man signed a new deal back in March 2017 that tied him to the club until 2020. Time flies, and all of a sudden he has just a year remaining on his deal.
In turn, that means he can start speaking to other clubs in January. Considering Gordon’s pedigree and trophy haul, he’s sure to be a high target for many clubs when that time comes.
Questionable as to whether Gordon would want to stay
You have to wonder whether Gordon would still fancy it here. At the age of 36, he won’t want to play second fiddle to anyone. But you also get the sense he would fancy himself to take Bain’s place back.

The Telegraph reported over two years ago that Gordon was keen on holding talks with Chelsea. That was when he was playing week-in, week-out with the Hoops too. So how would he feel about a move elsewhere now that he isn’t featuring?
If it was down to Celtic, then they really could do with tying him up. Unless a suitable replacement is found this summer, it doesn’t make sense to let Gordon go.

Dorus de Vries’ contract is also now up too (Daily Record). With no news of a new contract in place for the Dutchman, that will leave us with just two first-team goalkeepers. So unless a better alternative than Gordon is snapped up before the new campaign, it surely makes sense to hold onto the Scotland veteran.
This is a contract situation to keep an eye on. Losing Gordon would still be a big blow, even if he’s lost his place in the side. It’ll be interesting to see how Celtic move here in the coming months.
