Andrew Gutman’s debut was certainly bigged up by FC Cincinnati supporters, and now their manager has also chipped in.

The MLS Eastern Conference side are competing in the competition for the first time ever this season. Celtic defender Gutman has managed to bag himself a place on the project until the end of the 2020 MLS campaign.

It’s an exciting time for the on-loan Celtic man. The opportunity to come up against the likes of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Bastien Schweinsteiger, and Carlos Vela should bring his game on well over the next 15 months or so.

And after wowing the supporters on his debut against Columbus Crew, the praise has continued to flood in. New Cincinnati coach Ron Jans was happy to big up the left-back’s display. Speaking to FCCincinnati.com, Jans had this to say:

“I was really satisfied with his performance and also with his stamina, his fitness. He was taking the initiative.

“In attack, he can help us. I think he did a good, proper job also defensively. So a good debut.”

Gutman’s stamina was impressive in pre-season

As we all know, Gutman was invited by Celtic to the summer pre-season camp in Austria and Switzerland. The Hermann Trophy winner featured against SC Pinkafeld and Wiener Sport-Club in our first two pre-season victories respectively.

And, as Jans has touched on, his stamina was terrific. Perhaps this came from just coming off a half-season with Charlotte Independence in the USL. But even so, he was a lively customer.

One of his most promising aspects was how much he bombed down the left. He was always looking to combine with Mikey Johnston, and showed a good range of delivery when he got into the final third too. The only regret is the fact we never had the chance to see more of him.

Gutman was signed back in January along with fellow US youngster Manny Perez. Both now find themselves back in the States playing at different levels.

Perez was also back for pre-season, but picked up an injury before heading back to North Carolina. He most recently played in their 2-1 win over Indy Eleven 11 days ago.

So, at last, there’s a bit of closure on the duo and where their futures lie. For now, it’s all hands on deck for the pair back in the States, and it’ll be a while before we see either of them back at Celtic Park.
