Derby County fans have been discussing potentially being the destination for Celtic man Shane Duffy’s next move.

Duffy has had an outrageously dismal year at Celtic Park in his season-long loan stint from Brighton. Signed to help deal with powerful centre-forwards, the big Irishman has made mistake after mistake and is now nowhere near the matchday squads.

Indeed, Duffy’s last appearance was the 2-1 win at St Johnstone back in February. He was beaten in the air easily by Shaun Rooney in what was only one of a season packed with individual mistakes from the Brighton-owned star.

Celtic only have two games remaining, and it’s doubtful he’ll play in them to say the least. Nope, all eyes are now on Duffy’s next move as he gets set to return to the AMEX Stadium.

That’s where Derby come in. According to Football Insider, Brighton are looking to ship him out on loan again next season. They believe that Derby are interested in taking the struggling Irishman and giving his career the boost it needs in the Championship.

Shane Duffy’s next move looks like being the English Championship

This would look like the next logical step from Duffy. He’s a tainted player in Scotland now, and really needs to get out of Scottish football for his own good. Not that Celtic would even entertain bringing him back in any case. It’s been a total disaster of a signing from start to finish.

So what’s next for him? Well, it’s difficult to see a Premier League club taking a chance on him. Not with the high-profile errors and the damage he’s done to his reputation up here. It’s hard enough getting EPL clubs to take chance on successful players in Scottish football never mind failures. Therefore, he can rule a chance of a swift return to the top division out.

A move abroad also looks unlikely. Duffy’s physical style is most suited to the English game, and therefore a Championship move appears to be his best bet. That’s what would make Derby a potentially attractive option for him.

It could also be exactly what he needs to kick-start his career again. You can’t help but feel a touch sorry for him given how everything’s gone at Celtic Park this season. His season has been blowing up in front of him, with his confidence shot.

Discussing the potential prospect of taking Duffy back down south, however, the reaction from Derby fans appear to be mixed:

In other news, a player Celtic were interested in last summer is reportedly now valued at £35million.
