Celtic man who has ‘vanished off the face of the earth’ leaves Hugh Keevins scratching his head

Celtic’s summer transfer window was an interesting one.

As Brendan Rodgers entered the final year of his contract, there was a feeling that he was building a squad to prepare him for one last crack at the Champions League.

That didn’t go to plan, and after the Hoops boss’ demands weren’t met, he was left feeling ’empty’ after the closure of the window.

Celtic fan protests are set to continue too, with fans planning to remain silent at the beginning of three upcoming home matches.

But is Rodgers using his squad to its maximum potential? One radio pundit has discussed one player who is seemingly out of the picture.

Celtic man compared to Rangers winger by Hugh Keevins

The loan market has been kind to Celtic at times over the years – Marcelo Saracchi joined the club on loan from Boca Juniors this summer, as backup to Kieran Tierney.

But Keevins’ focus is on Jahmai Simpson-Pusey who joined the club on loan from Manchester City in August.

The 19-year-old was brought to the club with no option to buy, having featured for City’s first team over the winter period last season amid an injury crisis.

Despite being fit, the defender has made the Hoops’ matchday squad on just two occasions – both legs against Kairat Almaty.

Speaking on Clyde Superscoreboard, Hugh Keevins noted that the defender has seemingly disappeared, and compared him to a Rangers winger.

The pundit said: “It’s just our environment here. Celtic have a player from Manchester City who has vanished.

“Just to compare like with like. Celtic have got one from Manchester City who had vanished off the face of the earth.

“Rangers have got one from Tottenham who had a huge reputation, but has got caught up in all of what’s going on at Ibrox and has been sucked into the vortex.”

Moore has been a regular for Russell Martin’s side, facing criticism for his level of performance. We haven’t been able to see Simpson-Pusey in action, so making a comparison is challenging.

Do Celtic have too many squad players?

For a side competing on four fronts, depth is essential. Rodgers is now experienced enough at Celtic to know that.

But do Celtic have too many squad players? Simpson-Pusey is one of five first-team centre backs in the squad (six if you include Hayato Inamura) – yet Liam Scales and Cameron Carter-Vickers occupy a vast majority of minutes.

Auston Trusty has returned to fitness ahead of this weekend’s match against Hibernian, so could feature – but this would just put the Hoops loanee even further down the pecking order.

This isn’t just the case at centre-back – Callum Osmand was brought to the club this summer and is now fifth choice at striker. It’s clearly not easy to make your mark in this Celtic squad.
