It’s fair to say that Ryan Christie isn’t a fan of the video assistant referee. The Celtic midfielder launched a scathing attack on the technology following it’s very controversial impact on a match at the Women’s World Cup.

VAR had a major say on Scotland’s elimination from the tournament in France after it awarded Argentina a late penalty, and a subsequent retake in a 3-3 draw. Scottish football fans were up in arms across the country and Christie was no different.

Christie doesn’t seem too keen to see the technology come into the Scottish game, but will he get his wish?
VAR at Celtic Park
Scottish football may be some time away from bringing in VAR but Celtic may soon be using it in another competition. The system will be used in this season’s Champions League from the playoff round onwards. That means that Celtic Park could be decked out in the equipment in as little as eight weeks.

It would be interesting to see how the technology would impact the atmosphere on a European night at Celtic Park. The euphoria of scoring a goal is one of the greatest feelings in the sport and there are now fears that VAR adds an element of doubt to every such occasion. Fans dread the thought of celebrating strikes only to find out that they’ve been ruled out.
Until now, VAR has been something that Scottish football fans have watched from afar. Now it could be coming to our shores.
