Celtic miss out on new Utrecht signing Adam Maher

Celtic have missed out on what could be a potential steal of the summer from Utrecht, as they signed up Adam Maher on a free.

The Dutch international’s contract with AZ Alkmaar expired at the end of the season. Therefore, he was available to any and all who wished to pursue him. According to De Telegraaf, the Hoops were one of the contenders for his signature too.

Of course Maher apparently had interest from all over. The likes of Blackburn Rovers, QPR, Vitesse Arnhem, Fenerbahce, and Brescia were all linked with moves. But in the end, the Dutchman has joined fellow Eridivisie side Utrecht instead.

Maher has previously featured for PSV Eindhoven and FC Twente. Therefore, he’s a seasoned veteran when it comes to Holland’s top flight. He did have a bit of a stuttering campaign in that he only featured 24 times and notched one goal this term however.

But Maher is a proven playmaker. His reputation in Holland is a fine one, and there’s no denying that Utrecht getting him on a free could end up being their best bit of business this summer.

An area Celtic are surely looking at

Maher would’ve been up against some real competition in the Celtic midfield if he signed on at Parkhead. In his position, he would’ve been battling the likes of Tom Rogic and Ryan Christie.

Yet, whilst the current Hoops duo are proven talents in Scotland, Celtic could do with an added layer of quality in their number 10 position. There have been, as of yet, no further reports on Celtic tackling this position. But as the summer window kicks in, you would expect some movement there.

Maher could’ve been a fine bit of business had Celtic pulled it off too. His reputation shows real pedigree, with two Eridivisie titles with PSV to his name. Considering we could’ve gotten him for nothing too, it’s a shame we’ve missed out.

There’s nothing to suggest that Celtic were even in contact with him, however. The club certainly never confirmed anything, and the rumour hasn’t proven to be anything more than speculation.

So it’s another name we supporters can cross off the list. Neil Lennon, however, will surely have his priority targets ready to be headhunted.
