Celtic have just missed out on the big money signing of Croatian youngster Luka Ivanusec, according to a report.

The Scottish Sun say that the Hoops had offered a deal totalling £4.5million for the 20-year-old who already has a couple of caps for his country. The Croatian champions are said to have been willing to pay the entire £2.75million fee up front while Celtic’s offer was dependant on bonuses.

A source from Dinamo said: “We are delighted to have recruited Luka despite the fact big European clubs like Celtic and Olympiakos wanted him.”

Celtic move for Ivanusec poses some interesting questions

Some fans are often sceptical about the club apparently just missing out on players come the end of the transfer window. On plenty occasions in the past reports have emerged of Celtic willing to push the boat out for top talent but just being undone in the end.

This may well be another case of that. However, the Croatian midfielder does fit the mould of the kind of player we’ve signed in the past. We’ve shopped in Croatia in recent years with Jozo Simunovic joining from Dinamo in 2015. Filip Benkovic was another player we liked the look of before he completed a mega money move to Leicester City.

Despite being a midfielder, Ivanusec would be a similar kind of ‘project’ signing.

It is perhaps a little concerning that the club are looking to prioritise midfielders when there are a number of other positions in dire need of repair. We have a bit of a crisis going on at left-back at the moment so you would like to think we’d be looking to make a signing there pronto.

A right-back is also needed as well as another option for the left-wing. Central midfield, however, is probably the strongest area of our team.
