Celtic must send Lewis Morgan to a bigger club than St Mirren

Lewis Morgan’s future has been a bit of a hot topic this week after a frustrating start to the season for him on an individual level.

So far this season, the former St Mirren starlet has made 13 appearances for Celtic, but only five have come from the starting line-up (Transfermarkt). His place in the team looks impossible to win back with both Mohamed Elyounoussi and Mikey Johnston ahead of him too.

Morgan went through something similar last season before ending up getting game-time on loan at Sunderland during the second half of the campaign. Therefore, as we head towards January, it’s no surprise to see him touted for another loan move.

St Mirren manager Jim Goodwin told the Scottish Sun that he would “love” to have the Celtic man back at Paisley. Morgan was previously a hero at Saints after managing over 100 appearances for them (Transfermarkt). However, Celtic should make sure that there’s no romantic return to the Buddies anytime soon.

Morgan has already proved himself to be a success with St Mirren. He experienced both Premiership and Championship football there, and came to Parkhead not ready to be thrown into the first-team. There’s no reason to believe that it would be any different this time around.

A bigger club and a bigger challenge would be more suitable

As well as that, Morgan would be a big fish in a small pond at Saints. He needs to be playing alongside better players in order to bolster his game. Training every day with a squad sitting 10th in the Premiership wouldn’t improve Morgan’s game to any great extent.

Sure, it makes sense for him to play regularly against Premiership opposition. He needs to show the Celtic coaching staff and supporters that he can make an impact in this league. Morgan would undoubtedly have a better chance of doing that with a top-six club.

If possible, Celtic should really be trying to get in touch with the likes of Kilmarnock, Aberdeen, or Motherwell respectively. These are the kinds of clubs that could help propel Morgan to where we need him to be.

Examples of this play ahead of him in the team in Kristoffer Ajer and Ryan Christie. Both men played for Killie and Aberdeen in respective loan deals. They both came back ready to make an impact and have subsequently become stars.

A move to St Mirren is something Morgan has done and been a success at. It’s time for something fresh. Hopefully, he can get the move his career needs. But for now, it’s imperative that he continues to make the most of whatever opportunities he can get between now and the winter break.
