Celtic need to avoid going near Glen Kamara

Celtic’s interest in Glen Kamara has been rife over the last week or so.

The latest is that the Hoops are one of a number of suitors ready to go after the Dundee midfielder. Sunderland, Derby County, and even Rangers want the Dees star.

Yet, if Celtic’s Glasgow rivals truly are interested in Kamara, Celtic shouldn’t bother doing a Scott Allan this time.

It’s important that Brendan Rodgers isn’t fooled into buying anymore average Scottish talent. In the past, the Hoops have overspent on the likes of Jonny Hayes and Jack Hendry. Both have failed to make any form of positive impact at Parkhead, and are close to being considered flops.

It’s difficult to see Kamara coming into Glasgow and making much of an impact either. There’ll be a reason that many Celtic fans don’t even know who the Dundee midfielder is. Just because he used to play for Arsenal’s youth squads, that doesn’t mean he’s anywhere near good enough.

Celtic brought in Youssuf Mulumbu during transfer deadline day. Along with him, the likes of Olivier Ntcham, Callum McGregor, and Scott Brown all occupy the midfield roles. Even outside of the starters, Nir Bitton and Eboue Kouassi are available in reserve.

Kamara is unproven

The latter pair in that list may not be to everyone’s liking, but Kamara hasn’t proven he’s any better than them.

Rodgers, however, doesn’t look into what supporters think about his signings. His partner-in-crime, Lee Congerton, has so far been an unmitigated disaster of an appointment. It wouldn’t be overly surprising if Kamara is another one from the Head of Recruitment’s list of ideas.

Kamara is only 22-years of age, so there’s plenty of development there. But Celtic aren’t in a position to take unnecessary gambles on players anymore. The Dundee midfielder simply wouldn’t improve the Hoops squad, and that’s a fact.

With Rodgers coming under so much criticism this season due to some disappointing results, he doesn’t want to heap pressure on himself. Signing up someone like Kamara would do just that however.

Celtic will have plenty of transfer targets in mind for January. It’s important, however, that they go for the right ones.

At the moment, Kamara is nowhere near that list.
