Timothy Weah needs to break into Celtic side if he wants to stay

Celtic hotshot Timothy Weah may be a fan-favourite, but he hasn’t exactly been showered with opportunities.

The young American international has all of the attributes. He’s quick, has great ball-control, and is full of confidence and personality. He has what’s required to make it at Parkhead, and hopefully one day PSG.

So much so that some fans want Weah’s loan deal to be extended beyond the summer. He’s been such a hit with his bubbly personality and impact from the bench that fans want him here after his loan deal expires.

Here’s a quick look at what some of the Celtic support are saying about the USA striker:

This is just a taster of what fans are saying. Many have taken to Weah thanks to his promise on the pitch and his attitude off it.

But what hasn’t been discussed yet is that we can probably forget about a loan extension if he doesn’t break into the team soon.

Since signing back in January, Weah has only had two starts in 13 games in green-and-white. He has appeared in 10 of those matches, but only three of them have seen him feature for over half an hour.

Manager right to keep him on the bench

That’s not to say Neil Lennon or Brendan Rodgers before him have been in the wrong. Both Oliver Burke and Odsonne Edouard have been scoring goals and creating chances. They have the jersey and it’s down to Weah to take it off of them.

But if he fails to do so in the near future, we can likely forget about bringing him back next season.

PSG tied him up on a new contract before he made the move to Glasgow. Therefore, they surely wouldn’t send him to a place where he’s hardly been starting.

Weah, at this stage of his career, needs game-time. PSG will likely feel they need to send him to a club where he’s guaranteed that game-time to develop. Whether he would get that at Celtic next season is questionable.

His impact from the bench this season has been positive so far. He’s scored three goals for the Hoops and they’ve all come as a sub.

But being a super-sub isn’t a tag he needs at this stage of his promising carer.

Getting him back next year would be ideal. He’s a fantastic young talent who’s clearly highly-rated by PSG. But in order for that to happen, Celtic need to prove to PSG that he’ll be getting plenty of minutes. But Weah has to start showing he can stay in the team ahead of the likes of Burke and Edouard.

Lennon chose not to even bring Weah on at Easter Road, and only gave him 10 minutes at Tynecastle. That’s two of our biggest games of the season that Weah was barely involved in.

Hopefully, over the next couple of weeks, we can start to see some more of him. If we don’t, then we can probably forget getting him back next season.
